Location Innovation Hub receives European recognition for advancing GeoAI skills
The Location & AI online course series developed by Location Innovation Hub has received recognition at the European level. The courses were awarded a Special Mention in the Best Green Initiative category of the EDIH Network Awards for Excellence 2026 during the EDIH Summit 2026 in Brussels on 9 June 2026.
The Location & AI courses help businesses and organisations understand the opportunities created by combining location data and artificial intelligence through a practical, hands-on approach. The course series provides an accessible introduction to GeoAI and its applications in areas such as business development, decision-making, and sustainability. Its goal is to lower the barrier to adopting location data and AI, particularly among SMEs, while increasing understanding of how data can be used responsibly and effectively across different sectors.
The award recognised the courses' role in advancing GeoAI skills and their practical approach to helping businesses make use of location-based AI solutions. Location Innovation Hub's work was seen as supporting the green transition by making emerging technologies more accessible to businesses and organisations.

The Location & AI series consists of two online courses.
- Location & AI: The Basics provides an introduction to the topic and is designed for managers, business leaders, and EU project leads who may not have prior experience in location data or artificial intelligence.
- Location & AI: Deep Dive into Practical Solutions is aimed at professionals who already have some knowledge of AI or geospatial technologies and want to deepen their expertise through practical examples and real-world use cases.
Courses were launched in 2025, but their development is still ongoing. At the moment, all content is available in English, but the aim is to translate the courses into other languages as well.
“It is great to see that already hundreds of participants have registered for our courses and explored the world of GeoAI more deeply. We believe that upcoming language versions, such as German and Spanish, will make them more accessible and appealing to an even larger group of European professionals who can make use of location data and AI in their work,” says Olli Rantanen, Training & Network Manager at Location Innovation Hub.
The courses were developed in collaboration with the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), with contributions from a broad network of AI and geospatial experts from across Europe and around the world.
