Finnish Museum of Natural History: New skills and stronger networks for better biodiversity data management

The Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF), operated by the Finnish Museum of Natural History (Luomus), collects, maintains, and publishes data on Laji.fi, which currently holds around 55 million species records.

FinBIF used Location Innovation Hub’s services to develop a new OGC API interface for Laji.fi. LIH's networks also played a key role in fostering cooperation.

Alpo Turunen, GIS Specialist, Luomus / Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility

"The Location Innovation Academy course materials were really useful and helped us develop our spatial data skills. The course gave us a good introduction to the latest standards and data management practices, which we applied directly to our development work. The online materials have been invaluable in setting up up-to-date spatial data services. A few years ago, information on OGC API standards and their implementation was hard to even find.

Another key benefit has been the LIH Forestry Network, which has connected us with species data users, particularly in the forestry sector. We are already planning meetings and events together. The services provided by the Location Innovation Hub will greatly improve the overall management of species data.

LIH’s innovative approach to spatial data always brings new ideas and perspectives. A discussion with them almost always leads to a new innovation or improvement."
