Support for the space industry through the new ESA Phi-Lab Finland

ESA Phi-Lab Finland, developed and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) for the commercialisation of space technology, started operations in Finland on 21 January 2025. The new innovation programme will support selected space technology activities financially, but more importantly with research skills and infrastructure.

The consortium is coordinated by Aalto University, with the participation of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the National Land Survey of Finland / Location Innovation Hub and the University of Vaasa.

“As a centre of expertise for location information and technology, the Location Innovation Hub bridges the gap between research and business, bringing together knowledge and resources to help companies use location technology more effectively. We are looking forward to supporting business development through ESA Phi-Lab Finland," says Antti Jakobsson, Project Manager of the Location Innovation Hub.

Financial support of 4.4 million euros

The projects selected for ESA Phi-Lab Finland will focus in particular on remote sensing technologies and environmental monitoring applications, as well as the development of navigation technologies. These are areas in which Finland has excellence and where there are also commercial opportunities. The selected projects will receive a total of €4.4 million in funding.

ESA Phi-Lab Finland is supported by ESA, the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation, the KAUTE Foundation and the Weisell Foundation.

The first round of applications will be launched soon on the programme website. You can also follow ESA Phi-Lab Finland on LinkedIn. We will also keep you informed about upcoming funding calls on the Location Innovation Hub channels. The Location Innovation Hub will also provide guidance on how to make a successful application.
